Custom events

See your data

Named product actions count as billable events, one for one with pageviews. A pageview is an event. A custom event is an event. Goals and funnel definitions are rules over events you already send. They do not emit an extra billable event when you create them.

Properties are capped so cardinality stays bounded: at most 10 keys, each key at most 64 characters, each string value at most 256 characters. Do not put emails, names, or account ids in properties. The visitor id is already a daily hash. Adding a person id in a property creates the cross-day identity the product does not keep.

Outbound clicks and file downloads stay off unless the script attributes or the SDK calls turn them on. Those optional events are billable too.

Starter includes 1 million events per billing period. Growth includes 10 million. Scale meters past the included volume at $2.99 per extra million. On Starter and Growth, ingest continues after the cap and the overflow is hidden in charts until you upgrade.

  1. Register and add a website if you have not. The trial is 7 days with no card, from $4.99/mo.
  2. Install the script or the React SDK so pageviews are already arriving.
  3. Call track with a stable lowercase name, such as signup_completed.
  4. Pass at most 10 properties. Keys stay at or under 64 characters. String values stay at or under 256. Leave emails, names, and account ids out.
  5. Open the live view. The named event shows up next to pageviews. A goal you define later matches that name; it does not send a second event.
track('signup_completed', { plan: 'starter' })

Outbound clicks and file downloads stay off until the script attribute or the SDK option turns them on. Those optional events are billable too. Search Console clicks are not events. Do not subtract one from the other.
