Plausible vs Fathom

See your data

Plausible and Fathom do the same job: cookieless website traffic analytics. Pageviews, sources, campaigns, countries, devices, goals. Neither is a product-analytics suite. Neither is Matomo. If you are choosing between them, you are not choosing “privacy vs surveillance.” You are choosing open source and self-host versus a hosted dashboard with managed first-party domains — and how you want Search Console to show up next to that traffic.

Same job

Both exist because GA4 is the wrong shape for a lot of sites: cookies, modelling, and a UI that needs a priest. Both ship a small script, skip an analytics cookie for the default traffic model, and show one dashboard you can actually read. Both will miss traffic that blockers eat unless you first-party the script. Both can attach Google Search Console in the dashboard (Plausible for years; Fathom as a Search Console mode). Those overlays read Google’s window — about 16 months, with publish lag. They are not a second database of expired days.

Treat them as peers. Pick on operations and taste, not on a fake privacy ranking.

Open source versus hosted craft

Plausible’s code is public. Self-host if the database must sit on your metal and you will patch it. Cloud if you want their EU-hosted product and still like the option to leave. You get a stats API, shared dashboards, and a culture of “this is supposed to stay small.”

Fathom is a hosted company. You will not run their binary. You get a custom domain product so collection can look first-party without writing nginx, and packaging that assumes you might attach fifty sites. Agencies often land here because the dashboard is built to be shown, not excavated.

Neither choice makes the other unethical. Self-host is control and ops. Hosted is less ops and a vendor.

Search Console, without pretending it is traffic

Both can show queries, clicks, impressions, CTR, and position for the dates Google still has. Fathom is explicit that GSC rows do not share a session with Fathom events — you cannot honestly say “this keyword completed this goal” as one funnel. Plausible’s keyword panel is the same physics: Google’s API, Google’s delay, Google’s anonymised queries. When a day ages off the 16-month window, it is gone from the overlay.

If that live view is enough, stop here. If the actual requirement is an archive — 16-month backfill, 25k rows/day, kept after Google expires the day, MCP for agents — that is a different product. SiteLine is built for that job; it also does cookieless on-site analytics. It is not a reason to ignore Plausible or Fathom when you only needed traffic. See SiteLine vs Plausible and SiteLine vs Fathom only if the archive is on the shopping list. Product facts: /docs.

Blockers and first-party

Ad blockers still hit well-known collector hostnames. Plausible documents proxies (nginx, Cloudflare, Vercel, and friends). Fathom sells a managed custom domain. If “no reverse-proxy homework” is a hard constraint, Fathom wins that row. If “I already terminate TLS on my origin” is true, Plausible’s DIY path is fine — and self-host makes first-party the default.

Who should pick which

Pick Plausible if you want open source, a possible self-host exit, GA import, and a deliberately small traffic UI.

Pick Fathom if you want hosted polish, managed first-party domains, and multi-site packaging, and you do not need to run the software.

Pick neither if you need session replay, user profiles, or a warehouse. That is PostHog/Mixpanel/Matomo territory, not this pair.

FAQ

Is Fathom more private than Plausible?

Not in any way that should decide this purchase. Both are cookieless traffic tools. Plausible’s extra lever is self-host (you are the processor). Fathom’s extra lever is a hosted custom domain. Read each vendor’s policy; do not use this table as legal advice.

Do Plausible and Fathom keep Search Console forever?

They show GSC in the dashboard for Google’s current window. Days Google drops (~16 months) drop from that view. A durable import is a different job.

Can I use both?

You can, but you will double-count if both scripts fire. Choose one collector for traffic. Keep Search Console (Google’s UI or an importer) for queries.
