Fathom and Simple Analytics sell the same category: hosted, cookieless website analytics for people who are done with GA4’s UI. Both count visits without an analytics cookie. Both give you a dashboard you could show a client. Neither is Matomo, PostHog, or a warehouse. The choice is packaging, first-party collection, and whether Search Console belongs inside the traffic UI.
Same neighbourhood
You install a small script. You look at visitors, views, referrers, pages, countries, devices, and some form of events or goals. You do not get session replay. You do not get user profiles. You should not expect a referrer to contain the Google query — that died years ago. Queries live in Search Console.
Fathom leans agency: many sites, a dense-but-fast dashboard, a managed custom domain so blockers see your origin, and (as of 2026) a Search Console mode that re-skins the dashboard around clicks, impressions, CTR, and position for the dates Google still has.
Simple Analytics leans “keep it boring”: a readable product, events, exports, APIs, Looker Studio, a privacy-first brand. Its public integrations list is CMS, frameworks, and BI — not a GSC archive. Plenty of sites should run Simple Analytics and use Google’s Search Console next to it. That is a complete, honest stack.

Blockers and hostnames
Known collector hosts get blocked. Fathom’s answer is a productised custom domain. Simple Analytics has its own approaches depending on plan; do not assume either script is unblockable. If you already reverse-proxy everything, either vendor’s collect path can sit behind your domain — you are then doing the ops Fathom tried to sell you.
This row matters more than “who is more privacy-first.” Both refuse analytics cookies for traffic. Read the policies if you need a DPA, not this sentence.
Search Console is optional here
Fathom’s GSC mode is convenience: one login, still Google’s 16-month window, still ~days of publish lag, still no honest join from a keyword to a Fathom session. Simple Analytics leaving GSC in Google’s product is also convenience: fewer OAuth scopes, fewer ways to misread two systems as one.
If you need history after Google expires the day, neither traffic tool is the importer. A durable copy — 16-month backfill, 25,000 rows per day, kept while you subscribe, read-only, optionally MCP — is a different job. SiteLine does that job and also ships cookieless on-site analytics. Mentioning it here is only useful if that archive is actually why you opened this tab. Otherwise stay in this pair. Details live in SiteLine vs Fathom and SiteLine vs Simple Analytics. Import behaviour is in /docs.
Who should pick which
Pick Fathom if you want a hosted multi-site dashboard, a managed custom domain, and GSC in the same UI for Google’s current window.
Pick Simple Analytics if you want a simpler hosted traffic product, APIs/BI, and you are happy to keep Search Console in Google’s UI.
Pick Plausible instead if open source or self-host is the requirement (Plausible vs Fathom).
Pick none of these if you need replay, cohorts, or a self-hosted Matomo.
FAQ
Is Simple Analytics “less SEO” than Fathom?
Only if you expected the traffic tool to be Search Console. Fathom can overlay GSC for Google’s current dates. Simple Analytics expects you to use GSC (or export it). Organic performance still comes from Google either way.
Which is more cookieless?
Both are cookieless traffic products. Neither equals “no personal data in every jurisdiction.” Compare their docs and your other tags (ads, chat, replay).
Can I run both Fathom and Simple Analytics?
You can, but two collectors mean two scripts, two bills, and two numbers to explain. Pick one on-site tool. Add Search Console for queries. Add an importer only if you need days Google will delete.
