SiteLine vs Mixpanel

See your data

Mixpanel is product analytics: events on identified (or at least sticky) users, funnels, retention, cohorts, formulas, lookups. It is the tool you use when “signup_completed” belongs to a person who might come back next quarter. SiteLine is cookieless website analytics plus a durable Google Search Console import. Mixpanel is not a clumsy traffic tool. SiteLine is not a cheap Mixpanel. If you force them into one table of winners, you will ship the wrong SDK.

Different objects

Mixpanel’s object is a user (and their event stream). You send track and identify. You ask “what percent of users who did A did B within 7 days?” You pay in events and you think in properties. Cookies or mobile identifiers are normal because retention is the feature.

SiteLine’s object is a site-day. Uniques are a hash of truncated IP (/24 IPv4, /48 IPv6), user agent, and a daily salt. The hash resets daily. There is no analytics cookie. Collect uses fetch with credentials: 'omit'. You can still send custom events and define goals/funnels in the UI from paths and event names — they resolve against those daily visitors, not against a person graph. Search Console is a second object: queries, pages, countries, devices, imported read-only, 16-month backfill, 25k rows/day, kept while you subscribe, including fresh data before Google finalizes it.

PostHog sits on Mixpanel’s side of this line (with replay and flags). See SiteLine vs PostHog. Plausible and Fathom sit on SiteLine’s traffic side without SiteLine’s GSC archive.

What SiteLine will not pretend to be

No user profiles. No “same visitor, 30-day window.” No session replay. No heatmaps. No self-host. No warehouse dump of raw hits. First-party collection is a DIY proxy. If an agency asks for Mixpanel-style retention on a marketing site without logins, they are asking for a cookie (or a fantasy). SiteLine will not provide the fantasy.

Mixpanel will not provide Google’s query-level impressions with a 16-month-plus archive unless you pipe Search Console elsewhere. Organic search performance is not an event you track from the browser. It lives in GSC. SiteLine’s wedge is keeping that table.

Privacy

Mixpanel implementations that identify users are personal-data systems. Plan consent, DPAs, and deletion around that. SiteLine’s tracker is cookieless; the visitor key dies with the day. GSC import is Google’s search-performance data via webmasters.readonly, not a GA4 pixel. Write-up: /docs/privacy. Neither model excuses other tags on the page.

When to buy which

Buy Mixpanel when the product org needs funnels on users, retention, and cohorts. Buy SiteLine when marketing/SEO needs cookieless on-site counts and Search Console history that Google’s UI will delete. Buy both when you have a product and a marketing site with organic search as a channel.

SiteLine install: /docs/script. Overview: /docs. Trial: /register, 7 days, card at checkout. Plans $4.99 / $19.99 / $99.99 with Scale overage. Goals are not extra events. For cookieless traffic without Mixpanel in the room, SiteLine vs Plausible is the closer page.

FAQ

Can SiteLine show retention like Mixpanel?

No. Identity resets daily. There is no person to retain. SiteLine funnels are “how many daily visitors hit step 2 after step 1 in this range,” not “D7 retention of cohort C.”

Does Mixpanel import Search Console?

Not as SiteLine’s product: read-only, 16-month backfill, 25,000 rows per day, kept while subscribed, including fresh data before Google finalizes it, MCP. Mixpanel is for product events. Keep GSC (or SiteLine) for search performance.

Is SiteLine cookieless?

Yes: no analytics cookie, credentials omitted on collect, truncated IP + UA + daily salt. It is not Mixpanel-without-cookies. Details at /docs/privacy.
